Last Run of the Year!

I enjoyed my time running with El and Lisa this morning and am thankful they can run hills and chit chat at the same time, because I can't and I needed the distraction.  Unfortunately my tummy was not enjoying the run, and I ended up only making it through 4.3 miles.

The one and only drawback to running 5 mile drive is once your in the loop there are no bathrooms, so if you have issues, well you have really big issues!  That's all I have to say about that.

On the up side of things I was test running a bunch of new stuff.

The shirt is from Costco and for $12.99 is a screaming steal of a deal!  It's short sleeve and works perfect under my running jackets, it's V-neck, tech material, hugs but isn't clingy at all.  I have worn it on a previous run, but couldn't remember if I posted it here or not, and am too lazy to check.  Thanks to some Christmas $$ I was able to go back to Costco and get the shirt in two more colors, so am set for summer running shirts!  It's a long hem too, so covers everything you may want covered.  Go get one, or 10...totally worth it!

As a sizing note, I usually wear a M in all tops, but went for L in this material to accommodate the girls and not have it feel too tight in the warmer weather...hate my cloths sticking to me.  I love the fit, but can see that once the 1/2 training starts and the pounds start dropping (dropped 10 last time, and that was only running 1, this year I'm running 3) I may want M, so next time I'm at Costco will pick up a M or two to have on hand.

Again thanks to Christmas $$ (Thank you Dad!) I was able to order the running skirt in the picture.  It's an Athleta skirt and has been on back order for close to a year.  They finally had my size, so I ordered it pronto!  It has cute ruffle tiers in the front, and two tiers in the back.  Love the mesh shorts underneath...will make summer running a little cooler!  It's super duper cute, way more so than the pictures show!

Sizing note on the skirt, I got a M which is my usual size, and thank goodness there is a draw string, because it is a tad big.  The reviews on line said it ran big, but I have a feeling S would be too small with the hips I have to work with.

Dad got me the running tights, and I LOVE them!  They are not meant to be worn alone...they are a thick warm material for winter activity, but at the same time like nylons, so you need to have the assets covered or you will be flashing the world if you bend over/stretch in them!  Again they are Athelta, and are meant to be worn under skirts, so you can wear your running skirts (my fave thing to run in) year round!

Sorry for the blurry pic click here to go to the page and see what I ordered!  I like running with my cell phone for safety mostly, and for Runkeeper.  I like all my miles being tracked in one place, so even if I use the GPS watch, I enter everything into Runkeeper.  But, Mark and I got new cell phones and they are big old things, and my arm band was too small.  Plus the smallest armband in the brand I ordered was still too big for my puny little arms.  I have a belt that has water bottles, bib grommets for races, gel loops, zipper pocket, but the darn thing bounces around like crazy and I only use it if I have no other choice.

I have read a lot of reviews about SpiBelts and have been wanting one for a long, long time.  But, I was holding off because I already had a belt that worked even though I didn't like it.  Until, the new phone came along, and I have not been running with the phone, unless I have the jogger and can stash it in there.  Since I still had some $$ to work with I went ahead and ordered the above Spibelt.  A little skeptical as to the zero bounce factor, but you know what...it really doesn't budge!

I had my phone in there, and the mag flashlight I started this mornings run with because it was DARK!  And I never felt it, and it didn't move at all...one run and I'm in love with it!  The nice thing is it fits passports and other stuff, so will come in handy when traveling!  I opted for the water resistant pocket since I run rain or shine and it's my phone in there and it has 3 gel loops on each side of it, so that will be really nice come 1/2 marathon time!

Another blurry pic...click here to go to the page for a clear picture.  I have heard tons and tons of really great things about these Roga Shorts from Oiselle.  I have a few of their shirts and they feel amazing, so was really wondering about the shorts.  I have one pair of running shorts, but I don't wear them often as they are pretty spandex'ish.  I found this summer that I had a really hard time keeping up with my running laundry, so since I had Christmas $$ to work with thought let's give it a shot.  I tried them on when I got them, and love them.  Haven't run in them yet because it's too darn cold, but so looking forward to warmer weather so I can give them a go!

Next...running bra fitting and purchases to be made.  Have been doing all this running with only 1 good running bra!  It's time to fix that!

I'm really grateful to have amazing support from Dad when it comes to running stuff!  I know that cute matching running stuff is not a need, but it is so nice to have it!  Everything I have functions at a high level and makes running feel easier.  There are enough "normal" running pains that having clothing that doesn't add to it with chafing or whatever is really nice.

Plus there is something to be said for the mental aspect of feeling like you look good when running.  It helps, I don't know why, but it does!  I may not be a costume while running kind of runner (nothing against those that do dress up in costumes...I think it's fun and love seeing them run) but that is because I am fortunate enough to have good running gear and really cute running cloths, and I enjoy the heck out of my running stuff, so don't feel the need to costume it up.

So looking forward to all my running adventures in 2013!

Fun In The Kitchen

Her favorite spot to play in the kitchen.  I let it slide because she is happy and I have stuff to cook and things to get done in the kitchen, and at least it keeps her out of the glass dishes and breakables.  Plus, one of the first things I did was to put all the paper goods under the sink and move all the cleaning stuff and chemicals up above the washer and dryer.  I can hardly get to them, let alone her.

I gave the unplugged thing a go today sort of.  There were (still are) bowl games on all day long, so of course I had to tune in.  But, I was very limited in my phone and computer usage, and you know it felt strange but good.  I think I'm going to like being technology MIA once a week!

The nice thing is Sky likes football, and I have no problem turning blowouts and half time into whatever Sky wants to do time.  So, it all worked out.

So looking forward to my last run of the year tomorrow morning.  Going to be an early run, in the cold and dark, and it will be hilly...taking on 5 mile drive with El.  But, really looking forward to test running more new gear!!!

Not New Years Resolutions!

It's no secret I don't care for NY Resolutions.  My personal preference is to make changes and improvements all year long, not wait for NY and then after 3 weeks laugh and joke about how short lived my resolution was.  I'm not judging those that do make them, for some it works.  I just tend to find myself in a constant state of evaluation and adjustment.

So, I'm a little irritated that a few things I want to change and or begin are falling at the resolution making time of year.  Thanks to a magazine article and some really great Christmas gifts though, some things need to happen, and they aren't going to start happening until after this weekend, thanks to timing.

1.  The January Sunset magazine has an article about a family that unplugged big time.  While I found their unplugging to be a bit extreme it appealed to me none-the-less.  So, we will be unplugging on Saturdays starting, ummm I don't know when yet.  My only request was during football season/playoffs/Bowl season we not miss games that we (ok mostly I) want to watch.  So, it will depend on the bowl games, and NFL playoffs as to when this starts.

My goal is one day that we spend together with no computer, no TV, and no cell phones.  There is so  much input and output via social media, texting etc. that it feels like a break is in order.  More importantly I don't want Sky thinking she has to compete with all that for our love and attention.

While we won't be playing games on our phones, checking FB etc.  We will have our phones on, so if friends and/or family need or want to reach us, arrange plans or whatever they can do so.  We aren't trying to be antisocial after all, just trying to have less social media and more quality family time.

2.  Cooking with my Grandma every other Sunday (subject to changing to Saturday/Friday/or whatever day works).  My Dad gave me my Grandmas very old, and very loved Betty Crocker cookbook, with tones of hand written notes, and a binder with all her favorite recipes in it.

It's funny, because sometimes I swear I hear her saying my name and it's always when I'm in the kitchen!  The last few years I spent more time with her in the kitchen helping her see what she needed since her eyesight was so bad.  And, we spent a lot of time talking about baking cupcakes.  I don't even like to bake that much, and I don't remember her ever making a single cupcake, but we were both fascinated by fancy cupcakes with yummy fillings and beautiful frosting, and talked about all the combinations we would like to make and how we would go about getting the best flavor.

So, starting with the new year I'm going to go through all the recipes and "cook with Grandma" every pay day weekend.  I picked payday weekend just because that's when I do the bulk of the grocery shopping and I know I'll be able to add ingredients to my shopping list if I don't have them on hand already.

3.  Wednesday afternoons are for me, and me alone.  I'm so thankful that the parents take Sky for a few hours every Wednesday.  It started out with me going to the coffee shop and reading the whole time, or shopping for whatever I needed for myself.  Somehow it has turned into errand running, house cleaning, and doing things that have nothing to do with recharging my own battery.

Don't get me wrong...it was really nice to take the shower doors off the bathtub and scrub them top to bottom without Sky underfoot, but I'm with her 7 days a week, and am lucky to have a full nap every day of time to myself.  And, her naps are my time to take care of stuff that has to be done, not stuff I want to do.

Starting next week, Wednesday afternoons are back to being me time, and I'm going to be very protective of that time.  I have so many books I want to read, a knitting project I want to start and finish, a free mani and pedi that is going to expire soon, cooking shows that only I enjoy watching.  So looking forward to it!

That's it for now as far as resolution type things go.  Just so this isn't all text here are a few Christmas pics to enjoy!

Daddy showing Sky how her new balance bike works!

She looks so grown up in this picture.  :( but :) at the same time.

My New Office

A few weeks ago I went through my closet and cleaned it out.  I was brutal, got rid of 5 garbage bags full of clothing, shoes, handbags, hats, and some craft supplies.  Most of it was pretty worn out, and ready to move on.

What prompted this clean out?  I felt the need to be organized, and I knew there were cloths in there that either didn't fit, or I didn't love how they looked on.  Plus, I have a whole work wardrobe that hasn't been worn in 19 months...some of that stuff was worn out when it was being worn, so I cleaned that out as well.  I kept enough pieces to get me through interviews and going back to work though.

Another factor, I don't have any office space of my own.  The office we have is Mark's room and I'm fine with that.  But, I needed some space for the little paperwork etc that I'm responsible for and somewhere for my laptop to live that Sky can't get to.

I'm also on a whole house purge right now.  I just feel the need to get rid of it if it isn't something we use every day, or have a specific purpose that we need filled if it is used less often.  Plus we are getting rid of some of our bigger furniture/storage so I'm having to make more room in less space.

Since I already knew how I wanted the closet to look/end up after the clean out I started there.

The results...

My laptop and cell phone now have space to charge and yes, I do sit on the closet floor, sometimes I grab the step stool, and use the computer.  Above the computer is jewelry and our wedding pic.  I wanted my closet  to store what I needed it to, work as a little office space, and feel cozy as well.

Behind the laptop are two baskets with all my running accessories like gloves, hats, GPS watch, GU, gel, Glide, fuel belt etc.  I use that stuff every day so wanted to go through it and get it organized...I know that pic makes it look like a jumble, but it really is organized in those baskets.

To the left of the laptop is paperwork, recipes to organize and a book to go with my peg board for trigger pointing.  I also have less used stuff back in that corner, like all my winter gloves that go with my dress coats, a file box full of cards for any occasion and my old cell phone and accessories, in case the new one dies or something.

Closer look at the shelf above the laptop desk area.  The jewelry I wear the most, and a few magazine pages showing a million ways to tie and wear a scarf and a few other fashion tips that come in handy.

In the opposite end of the closet behind the laptop station is more shelving that holds all the summer shoes, foot powder/spray etc (runners have nasty feet...just saying) all my jewelry making stuff (I probably should have gotten rid of it, but I still make custom pieces here and there), handbags and a picture of Sky...again trying to make it functional yet cozy and happy as well.

See all those empty hangers?!  That isn't even all of them...that's how much stuff I got rid of!

Lower shelf under Sky's pic is another space for books, paperwork, address book etc.  And, a spot for my Grandma's jewelry box and jewelry I don't use as often but has meaning to me.

So, that's my new office and my effort at organizing and making the most of the space I have to work with.  There is a whole other shelf I didn't take a picture of storing travel stuff, and camping cloths and other clothing/travel items that I need, but don't use on a daily basis.

I have gone through part of the smaller pantry (the one that holds all the drank and bar stuff), have a bit more to do in there.  Next is the utility closet and Asian book shelves in the entry hallway.  It's just too dark and bulky for our smaller entryway.  But, it's a challenge...there is a crap tone of stuff stored there.

I feel lighter already though.  Streamlining and cleaning your physical space has a way of making the inner self feel lighter as well.

That Felt Way Too Difficult!

The Stroller Group run was not really a group, was El and I taking turns pushing Sky.  And, even with having help pushing I had to walk one of the hills.  It just felt really, really hard today.  Probably from the lack of regular running and all the holiday food, drink, and treats.  Just felt like a slug trudging through wet concrete.

But, as always I enjoyed running time with El and being able to run our own pace and chit chat about whatever we wanted.  Friend running time is always good even if the running itself doesn't feel great.  3.01 miles with an average 10:30 pace.  Not bad!  Last group run of the year, wondering if the numbers will increase with the New Years Resolutions.

There are a lot of great Christmas pics to share and stories to tell, but until the photographer has a chance to view and edit his handy work I won't be posting anything.

So instead I share a few cut pics from today...

I guess that means I just deemed myself cute.  :)  New running top and pants, thank you Dad!  Ran in them today and both are amazing!  The pants look great, and function great as well.  No rubbing in wrong spots etc.  The shirt kept me warm, didn't slide up while running and doesn't rub in the wrong places.  Plus it has a half zip for the turtle neck part, so as I heat up I can unzip and help control body heat.  Love, love, love this combo!  Trying to add color to my running gear, so love that this tope is purple and white!

Showing off her new Hello Kitty track suite.

Two of her new favorite things...her chair and her harmonica!  Thank you Grandpa for the chair, Grampy and Grammy for the harmonica, and Grandma for the Hello Kitty outfit!

If only the whole world were this happy while grocery shopping!

Sky's First Hair Cut!!!

Yesterday was the big day.  It was time to get her bangs our of her eyes, and lose the baby mullet!

We got there early so Sky could explore and get used to the salon.

Before the cut, playing around.

El and Sky playing in the sink.

Letting El know what her expectations are.  ;-)

Mommies hair needs some work too!

It wasn't all happy see above and below, but Daddy stepped in and offered a friendly lap to sit on and that helped a little.

Eventually Sky let El finish and she now has a cute new, more stylish than Mommy, hair cut!  And the best part is...she didn't lose her curls!

A big, big thank you to El for giving Sky her first hair cut.  It meant a lot to me that someone who has known Mark and I from the first date was a part of one of the big firsts in her little life!

Sky Pics

Daddy was in the bathroom so of course Sky had to give the big potty a go.

Sky says ear protection is important!!

Sky and I had a busy day yesterday grocery shopping.  Three stops, one of which was Costco, the Friday before Christmas!  Was kinda crazy, but we got it done, and even managed a run to the park, play time at the park, and a run back home for a little over 3 miles.

Today, a few more errands, Sky's first hair cut, and early Christmas with Grandpa and Grandma!

From The Kitchen

Curtsey of daydreamkitchen Annah (Michelle's niece, newly here from TX) and I made Brown Sugar Cookies yesterday, and my verdict...they are the bomb!

Not a ton of flavor, pretty "vanilla" actually, but I love that.  Plus, they are the perfect soft chewy cookie consistence that I LOVE!

Totally easy, totally stuff most people have in the pantry.  Easy to whip up with an 11 year old doing most of the work!  ;)

Now, what to do with my 1/2 of the cookies?  I didn't make them GF, so Mark can't eat them, I don't really want Sky pigging out on them, nor will I eat them all.  I have had two I think.  Hmmm...going to start giving them away to strangers I think!

Ingredients:
2/3 c. butter, softened
1-1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
2 eggs
1 t. vanilla extract
2-1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 t. baking powder
1 t. baking soda
1/2 t. salt
1 c. sour cream

Directions:
Blend together butter and brown sugar.  Add eggs, one at a time; blend well.  Add vanilla; beat until light.  In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.  Add flour mixture to butter mixture alternately with sour cream; mix well.  Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto non-stick or lightly greased baking sheets.  Bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes.  Remove to a wire rack; cool.  Frost with Browned Butter Frosting.  Makes 2 dozen

Browned Butter Frosting
1/4 c. butter
1-1/2 c. powdered sugar
2 T. Milk

Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat until it turns golden.  Watch carefully as this will happen quickly. Remove from heat. Stir in powdered sugar and enough milk to make a spreading consistency.

Thankful Thursday

I'm thankful for a moment shared with Sky at her Dr. appointment today.

It's no secret I'm not a fan of her getting shots.  More specifically of me being the one that has to pin her down, and the look she gives me while it's happening.

I was thankful she ended up only needing two.  I'm even more thankful for her loving little heart.  As I was wrapping her up in a bear hug/pin to the table she looked up at me and whispered, "I love you" and then started crying.

It broke my heart in a good way.  That little girl gets to me in ways no one else ever will.

On a side note this was the first appointment that she was big enough to step onto the adult scale.  She was so proud of herself stepping up there and then turning around and doing her little happy feet shuffle for all to see.

Play Date

Reagan and Sky had their last play date before Christmas, which meant a little gift exchange.

I forgot my camera, so had to use the phone...little blurry.

Sky LOVES stacking things and building towers only to knock them over.  The blocks are already getting heavy usage!

Reagan was super excited about the tissue paper!

Jodi, Amy and I had fun visiting, keeping track of the mini's, and critiquing how each of us cooks eggs.  Hide and seek was particularly adorable.  :)

I was a little on edge most of the day after finding out Grandpa was having emergency surgery, but just before leaving for the evening run club I got a call letting me know that Grandpas outcome seems like it was the best case scenario.  He is going to have a nasty scar, but he is ok and the malignancy does not appear to have spread!

Tuesday night run was another fast one...2.94 miles with a 9:30 pace and Michelle and I found $11 total, 2 $5's and $1!  We got coffee money while running!!!  Can't beat that.  Well I could beat it if I found money on the stroller run this morning.

Builder Sky

Sky's new favorite thing...

...her new tool belt!  We had Christmas with the Beckham's Sunday night and this was one of her gifts.  Her tool belt was the first thing she grabbed yesterday morning, and after her nap.  She ran up with is saying "hep, hep, hep", which is her version of help.  I tied it on and she was so happy, playing with her tools and putting things in the pockets.

She is going to help Daddy finish the bathroom!

There are more pictures from dinner...will post those later.

Funny Race Pic

Had to share this picture...the photo bomber between Elya and I cracks me up!  He looks so angry.  His Jingle Bells must have been cold.  ;)

Stroller Mommies right before the gun!

TV Free Day

This is how I will be spending my time today...

...playing with Sky, doing whatever she wants to do, running one last Christmas errand for her bff Reagan.

What we won't be doing is watching the Today Show, News, or TV period until Monday Night Football, or maybe some ESPN, or better yet my new Sound of Music DVD!  (Thank you Beckham's!)

It's just too much, the constant coverage of the shooting, the officers killed in Kansas, the threat made against WA Schools...and on and on.  It doesn't do me or Sky any good to wallow in the grief.

I have heard some criticism for getting on with normal life and some feeling like others aren't grieving enough.

To that I would say I think most people are doing the same thing I am, fighting tears on a minute to minute basis.

Since Friday every time Sky runs up and gives me a hug, or smiles at me, or I cross a finish line in a race with her, or we play together, or we sit as a family and have dinner, or I spend time with my friends, or think about my friends that are teachers I have to fight to keep from crying.

I feel sick and sad, and my heart just hurts.

But, does any of that do Sky any good?  My one and only job during the day is her and doing my best to make sure she is healthy, happy, and growing into a person that values herself and others and contributes to her community.  My sitting around wallowing in grief and shock and crying isn't going to accomplish any of that.

So yes, life is moving on like "normal" for the majority of the country/world.  Because we don't have much choice.  There is work and family and plans that just don't make sense to cancel and we all have little people in our lives that are either too young to understand (and don't really need to know what is going on) or they are old enough, but need the normalcy for their own well being.

While my thoughts are with the families that lost loved ones, my actions are with my family and friends and enjoying each and every second of every day that we all have together.

Santa Ran Tacoma!

Elya and I waiting for the start.

We did it!
Notice the Christmas ribbon weaved in the spokes?  That's as close to running in costume as I get!

I had so much fun running today!  Thank you to Elya for running with me and dodging the masses as we whizzed past people, trying not to run them over with the strollers.  It's the first time I have run this section of road, in any of the races that have included this particular section, that I did not have a mental break down of any kind.  I have totally lost on this stretch many times.  But, not today...didn't phase me one little bit!  I was happy, felt great, and having fun!

Crossing that finish line with Sky felt pretty amazing.  I had to fight for control.  I was just so happy to have her with me, have my friends running the same race, feel good running it, and feel like I concurred a course that has haunted me.

Shout outs:

Alex who ran his fist 5K today in 23:57!  Dude you killed it out there.  I was so excited when I saw you coming back at me after the turn around!

Michelle who said she would stick to a 9:30-10 pace...girl did it in 27:20, which is a PR!!!

Elya who was pushing two kiddos finished in 30:27 and that is a double PR...for her 5K time period and for a 5K with her kiddos!!!

Sky and I finished in 30:19.  Which I feel pretty bad ass about!

Lesson learned...don't start in the back...so hard to get around people, slowed Elya and I down a lot.  Next time I'm with the stroller I'm starting near the front and people can try and pass me!

Race Day

It's my first race with Sky today!  It's cold here, everything is frozen this morning.  So we will both be bundled up.  I'm once again thankful that Sky has such a nice jogging stroller that is fully enclosed.  She will be nice and warm!

I spent some time last night running Christmas ribbon through the spokes of the wheels and will have pics of our first mommy daughter race later today.

After yesterday it seems that much more special to be sharing something I love with my little girl.  It's a sad day when I'm thankful my Dad is no longer a teacher, but is a corrections officer instead.  I think he is actually safer on the inside with the convicts.

As a parent it is so hard to find the balance of "I want to keep you safe and protect you" and "I need to let you grow and let you go".

Sky and I met a friend yesterday and he is so calm and level about things.  While I know he was angry and upset about what happened his plan of action calmed me.  The next PTA meeting he is asking what the security plan is for his daughters school, what is the lock-down plan, how are parents notified, what is the school going to do to prevent a shooting and how will they handle it if something does happen.

It helped me realize that we can protect and keep safe to a point.  After that all you can do is be informed and prepared.

My heart goes out to those lost, those left hurting, and those left that have to find a way to get back to normal.

From the Kitchen (From Jodi's Kitchen Actually)

I have not been trying new recipes lately.  It's a busy time of year with one or the other of us being busy/out for one reason or another.

So, I have been sticking with quick and easy favorites, and stuff that makes enough extra for lunch and dinner the next day.  On nights I'm out I cook a big dinner the night before so Mark and Sky still have a good meal that he can heat up easy for the two of them.

I did however make Christmas cookies this year and it was a new recipe.  Had I known how much work they were I would have picked something different, but they did taste yummy.

Thankfully Jodi was willing to let me make a mess in her kitchen and we made cookies together.  Hers were yummy and so much easier!

White Chocolate Cherry cookies.  They were supposed to be half dipped in white chocolate and then the white chocolate edge rolled in red glitter...very pretty, very labor intensive.  Since they tasted good as is, and it had already taken a lot of time and work to get to a basic baked cookie, I didn't worry about making them look fancy.

The girls pulled up chairs to stand and watch what we were doing.  I know it's blurry...those two are really hard to get a clean pic of...constant motion!

Educational piece for the day...

If a recipe calls for a pastry blender this is what it looks like.  Used a lot to cut in cold butter to dry ingredients.

I'm thankful someone I know has a very well outfitted kitchen and let me snoop around just to verify the existence of a pastry blender.  I'm also very thankful she ended up having one...forks don't work nearly as well!  :)

Thankful Thursday

I'm thankful we don't have any plans today.  No where to go or be, but there is stuff to get done.  I have a to do list that I'm excited to tackle.

It includes stuff like...

laundry...not my laundry

I have several phone calls to make and a vet appointment to make for Ollie...just a check up, not a big deal, and I'm feeling the need to streamline and purge.  Starting with my closet and I'm being brutal...if I don't wear it once every two weeks it's out...if it doesn't fit, it's out...if I don't LOVE how it looks on me it's out!!!  Once the closet is done it's on to the rest of the house!

I also plan on spending a good amount of time playing with this little girl...

She loves that stroller, but the dogs don't!  She is kind of a terror with it.

Tuesday night Michelle and I joined the Tuesday Night run club at Fleet Feet for the first time.  There is a 3 and 6 mile group...we went with the 3 mile group.  What a fun time!  It was a fast run, faster than what we usually do on our own.  I think this group will be great for us once the 1/2 training starts!

Wednesday morning I had the Stroller Group run...funny how mush slower things are with a stroller to push...and Elya and I were switching on and off as we had both our girls in her double.
