Fun in the Sun!!

Sky started her duathlon training yesterday!  Take a look at her first biking/running adventure at the park!

You know what this means...the day is coming when I can run while she bikes!  As much as I love pushing her in the stroller, she is getting heavy and it's getting harder and harder!  She did about a mile yesterday...it was slow though...I never even had to fast walk to keep up with her.  So, you know maybe not a great speed workout.

She loves her "bike" and asks to ride it every time we step outside the front door.  But, I realized yesterday she really must be a runner at heart, because she kept randomly jumping off her "bike" and taking off running.  Totally abandoning that cute little tricycle and dashing clear across the soccer fields, or down the path around the bend.

There was a fork in the path ahead of her, and she was having a hard time deciding which way to go.

Practicing for her future adidas sponsorship!  She's was totally throwing her arms in the air and yelling "adidas" for all to hear.

Can we talk about this adorable outfit for just a second?!  I love that Costco carries cute adidas running outfits for tatter tots.  Sky was so excited about this pink outfit and in particular was a huge fan of the skirt.  She kept twirling about, talking about dressing like mommy, and randomly shouting out "adidas" on her ride through the park.

She kept yelling at me, "no take off my skirt"...you know because I randomly take her cloths off in public.  I should probably get this outfit in the next 2 or 3 sizes up since she likes it so much!

Loving the early summer sun and heat!  Breaking out the kiddy pool today in fact...gotta enjoy it while we have it!

I particularly love the warm weather for the Tuesday night group run.  It just makes it so much more enjoyable when it's nice out.  Makes it harder to work on speed, but still so much better than dark rainy runs!

Stroller group run this morning and then I'm done until I take on the hills Sunday!  So excited to run my first relay race!

Happy hump day everyone...enjoy it!

Drink With Two Hands

Just a quick post today to share something I've been thinking about every since I read about drinking coffee with two hands over on Under The Sycamore.

I don't know about anyone else, but I usually walk around the house picking up, getting things done with my coffee.  Or I'm doing this while enjoying my coffee...

Mommy/blogger multitasking for the win...or maybe not.

Ever since reading Ashley's post a few weeks ago I'm making more of an effort to drink my coffee, wine, water, tea etc with two hands.  I can't tell you how much more "in the moment" time I've had (especially with Sky...our conversations are so much fun!), and let me tell you, it's way more fulfilling than anything I would have gotten done trying to multitask!  Plus, I don't misplace my coffee or wine nearly as much!

Such a simple concept!  Please check out her Post...it's worth it!

----------------------------------------

P.S. Mark is doing a training class from home all week which means I have very limited computer/internet access during the day.  If I'm on the internet the same time he is for class it jams up the connection and either stops his class or causes it to run so slowly he can't keep up.  So, I'll either be posting less this week and/or having to get up extra early/stay up later to get it done.

I don't mind though...it's getting warmer and warmer leading up to 80 on Thursday, so Sky and I will be outside playing in the sun and drinking our iced tea with two hands!  :)

Weekend in Pics

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  Ours was busy with friends/family, projects around the house, and best of all taking Sky to her first movie in the theater!  Rio 2 for the win!  Super cute movie and I totally want the soundtrack!

I started today with what was supposed to be a 6 mile run, but that didn't happen.  I got 4 fast miles in before things derailed and I walked/slow jogged the last 2 miles home.  No injury, so no worries there.  I had a bloody nose the entire run, and I ate either the wrong thing before running, or there was too much time between eating and running...got really dizzy and light headed/vision turning black on the edges, so I walked/slow jogged the last two miles.

Not much to prove on a training run for a relay leg that is a distance I don't really need to train for.  Figured it was better to play it safe and get home in one piece.  I'll totally be ready to take on my 6 mile leg of the relay next Sunday!  Looking forward to it actually.  Bring on the hills 5 Mile Drive, I've done it before and I'll do it again!

A look at the rest of our weekend (the only thing I don't have pics of is dinner with Elya, Ryan and the kiddos, dinner with Gentry (Mark's Dad), and the work Mark and I did outside the house)...

Ending my weekend with Ginger Beer!

I was way overdue for a haircut...feels so light and free after Eleanor works her magic!

I think this wall/entry way into Embellish Salon is the coolest in T Town!

Mark installed some wire rack's (up by the inset for the fan...lot's of unused space up there!) for extra storage of spices and seasonings that I don't use as often.  Sky was oh so helpful.

Reading her plane book...getting her ready/excited to fly to Houston in a week!

The weather today was stupid..rain, sun, storm clouds, bright sun, hot, cold...just all over the place.  So, Mark decided it was time for Sky's first trip to the movie theater.  She did pretty great.  Got a bit restless, but Rio 2 is the follow up to the first movie she fell in love with, so she was totally into it!

Girl loves motorcycles.  She hears them go past the house and even when she can't see the road will say "It's a motorcycle!"  She begs to ride the one that Costco has in the front of the store.  Please, please don't let her first vehicle be a two wheeled one!

We spent a good hour laying in bed snuggling and hiding (from what I have no idea) under the covers.

I can see once again!  Had an eye appointment Saturday morning and I needed it!  Things had gotten a tad blurry the last few months.  Basically I'm getting old, but it's ok age is just a number and as long as I can run I don't care what that number is!

------------------

What is your go too beer?
This orange ginger beer may be my new go to beer!

What's the weather like where you live?
All I know is today was crazy.  It felt like weather whiplash.  Even more crazy 80 by Thursday?!  I just hope it cools off again for the Tacoma City Marathon Sunday!

Anyone else love the Rio soundtracks?
I loved the first one, but Rio 2 has it beat big time!

From The Kitchen - Fish Tacos!

I'll admit that I'm a little scared to cook fish/seafood myself.  It seems like something that has to be cooked perfectly so I don't give my family food poisoning.  Oddly enough eating raw sushi doesn't phase me in the least.

Maybe I should just serve all seafood raw?!

I tackled Tilapia fish tacos a few days ago, and it was really good, and better yet...no one got sick!!!

I found the recipe in Every Day with Rachael Ray...love her magazine.  I get more recipes from her magazine than anywhere else!

Fish Tacos with Summer Salsa

Click the above link for the original recipe!

Ingredients:
  • 1 pound halibut or other meaty white fish fillets (I used tilapia).
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • 1 11 ounce can  whole tomatillos, drained
  • 4 small zucchini peeled, seeded and cut into small cubes (I didn't use this at all, but added about 1/4 of purple onion instead)
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro leaves and stems (used more like 1 cup or a bit more)
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons coarse salt, plus more to taste
  • 8 6 inches corn tortillas (Trader Joe's Corn Tortillas are the best!)
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder (I used 1 to keep it Sky friendly)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste (Used a bit less)
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 Hass avocado, peeled and thinly sliced

 Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to 225 degrees.
  2. Place the fish in a medium bowl and drizzle with half of the lime juice. Cover and refrigerate for 15 minutes.
  3. Using your hands, squeeze the juice and flesh from the tomatillos, 1 at a time, into a medium bowl; discard the skins. Mash the tomatillos with a fork. Add the zucchini, the remaining lime juice, the cilantro and 2 teaspoons of the salt and toss.
  4. Spread the tortillas on 2 baking sheets and warm in the oven for about 10 minutes.
  5. In a small bowl, combine the chili powder, cayenne pepper and 1/2 teaspoon of the salt. Remove the fish from the lime juice, pat dry and cover with the spice rub. Heat the olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat and cook the fish, about 4 minutes on each side. Break the fish into bite-size pieces and season to taste with salt.
  6. Arrange the fish in the tortillas with some of the salsa and avocado slices.
I skipped steps #1 and #4.  We prefer our tortillas browned in a skillet on the stove top.  You can heat a bit of olive oil, coconut oil, or use a non-stick spray (which is what I usually do) and warm the tortillas on both sides until warm and starting to brown a bit.

Super quick and super easy dinner to cook!  Perfect with a bottle of chilled white wine/summer meal on the deck!  So can't wait to eat our meals on the deck!

Thankful Thursday!

Today I'm thankful for:

-Managing to get all the grocery shopping done, and unloaded from the car without getting rained on once!  I timed things right today!

-That the Steelers have a week 12 Bye (perfect timing!), and they only play one game outside their time zone!  Plus, there are several prime time games so I'll get to see them play a few times this season!  Thank you NFL!

-That Elisabeth at Running on E answered the 10 questions I posted yesterday (in the comments).  Go check out her blog and say HI!

-Late afternoon naps in odd places that don't affect how easily she goes to bed!

Yesterday around 5 pm...woke up for dinner and then went to bed and was out by 7:30, slept until 7:00 this morning!  She loves her sleep!

-The ability to laugh at myself and my A-typical runners body!

-That Sky is taking a nap today and I have a few moments of peace to blog, eat a very late lunch, and finish putting groceries away.

What are you thankful for today?

Liebster Award!

Oh what fun!  I have been nominated for my first blog award by David @ http://www.captainspeedypants.com/ !

Please check out David's blog as he shares his trail running and training adventures!  I'm not much of a trail runner myself, (I'm not saying that's the only kind of running he does, but since I've been reading that's what he has posted about), regardless this road runner enjoys reading about his adventures on the trails!

Award Rules:
-Thank your Liebster Blog Award presenter on your blog.
-Link back to the blogger who awarded you.
-Answer the 10 questions from the nominee.
-Copy and past the award to your blog.
-Nominate 10 of your favorite blogs.
-Create 10 questions for the new nominees.
-Inform them of their nomination.

Here is what David asked me:

1.  Why did you start blogging?
Well it really started as a way for me to share my life/adventures with friends and family that lived far and wide.  When I started I wasn't as much of a cook, nor was I runner, and I had zero plans to have a little one.  The blog has changed a lot over the years, and now it's a place fore me to still share my/our adventures, but to also post a zillion pictures of my tatter tot and talk about my love of running!

2.  What is your main goal for 2014?
My main running goal is to PR all the distances I run, primarily focusing on the Half (have yet to find a road 10K, but am doing a trail 10K, so may count that is my PR, if I PR it).

3.  If you didn't have to worry about money, what would you spend your days doing?
Making jewelry, wine tasting, reading books, working out, cooking new things every day!

4.  Do you prefer short and fast or long and slow?  (I mean running race distances, you dirty minded people).
Long and slow for sure.  So not a sprinter!

5.  Do you prefer working out in a gym or at home?
Since I don't currently have a gym membership I have to say at home.  Although I miss the cross fit and zumba classes very much!

6.  What sports, athletes, teams do you follow?
I love all sports!  But, my first true sports love is Football!  I'll watch HS, College, Pro, whatever I can find.  I have always been a Steelers fan (makes me popular in WA!), but my Dad's cousin played for them in the 70's so it's a family thing that I grew up with.  I also love college basketball and have been a Duke fan since HS.  NBA is ok, but I really only watch if the Trailblazers are playing, which they are tonight in the playoffs!  Biggest reason we even still have cable is because I just can't live without my sports!  ESPN is on a lot in this house!

Not much of an individual athlete follower...just not all that star struck by anyone famous (other than Steven Tyler...don't even get me started).

7.  Where did you grow up and what is that area known for?
Castle Rock, WA and it's known for Mt. St. Helens.

8.  Are you a dog person or cat person, and why?
100% a dog person, mostly because if house cats were big enough they would stalk us and eat us like lions.

9.  What is your favorite food?
Oh man this is a really hard one for me.  There is so much good food out there and I'm such an adventurous cook.  But, if you looked at the weekly meal plan you would find more Mexican food than anything else, so I guess I'll go with Mexican Food.  I do love Asian food though.

10.  What makes you unique?
I actually like going to the dentist, I put apple cider or malt vinegar on my tortilla chips, I salt my apples/oranges/watermelon, I loved how brisk and curt NY was...I would be totally happy if I could go about my business and not have to have "pleasant" conversation with anyone...short quick interactions are totally my thing, I actually like running hills and crave the variation they offer...flat courses kill me, I rather despise putting on makeup and doing my hair, I'm a chronic "chain" breaker on FB/Twitter/Bloging (sorry!), I have a spreadsheet with over 300 books on it that I want to read...going to stop there before I share too much!  ;-)

Thank you again Captain Speedypants for the nomination this was fun!

Sine I really don't know who to nominate...anyone who would like to answer the following 10 questions (any or all of them) please do so in the comments, or on your own blog!

1.  If you could go back in time and witness a single event in history, what would it be?
2.  What survival skill do you bring to the table in the event of a zombie apocalypse?
3.  What is the furthest you have traveled from home, and was it work or pleasure?
4.  How many languages do you speak and what are they?
5.  Do you sing along with the radio?
6.  All time favorite book, movie and TV show?
7.  What is your all time favorite cookbook?
8.  If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
9.  What's the one food/dish you have never tried, but want to?
10. What is the number one most favorite race you've done and why?

My Personal Cheerleader

Happy Earth Day!  It is truly a beautiful morning in the PNW and we just had to get out and enjoy it!

Since this may be the last sun we get for several days Sky and I headed out for a run.  It had been almost a week since my last run and I was so ready to get out and stretch my legs!  I needed the break though.  I now feel ready to run, ready for the next few races, and ready for the next training cycle to start!  All the inspiration from Boston yesterday helped as well!

Snacks, sunglasses, books, Daisy Duck...Sky is ready for a run!

It's been a long, long time since I ran with Sky on our own.  The Stroller Group runs are always a pretty easy pace (that doesn't mean they feel easy though), but when it's just the two of us I like to push the pace.  I figure if I can get within 20 to 30 seconds of race pace while pushing the stroller then race day will feel super easy.

It felt hard, I haven't put effort into a sub 10 with the stroller in a long time, but I did it.  Average was 9:32 (or close to it, I forget exactly).  That's pretty decent.  I noticed it felt way harder after this last training cycle than it felt back before Whidbey.  But that was months ago and I know Sky has grown since then, it's just going to keep getting harder and harder the bigger she gets.

She loves the reverse camera option on my phone!

Thankfully Sky is the best cheerleader ever!  She's usually pretty quiet in the stroller, but today she wanted the the sun shade and screen left open and she was yelling her head off.

All I heard the whole 3 miles:
"Faster mommy, faster"
"Come on Mommy you can do it"
"Bump, be careful, don't hurt me"
"Watch where you're going"
"Don't hurt yourself"
...and the best part was when I hit the one short yet steep hill "Go mommy, go, you can do it", and as soon as we got to the top, "Mommy you did it, good job"!

Every time she told me to go faster I let her know I was already going as fast as I could and her response every single time was "No!  You go faster".  Seriously better than any running coach!

After that it was time to play and let Sky run around the soccer field.  I offered to drive down to the playground, but she said no.  She really just wanted to run around the fields.

Loves the breeze on her face!

Reading the Cherry Tree sign to herself.  This picture doesn't even come close to showing off the pink and white dogwood trees.  So pretty!

You can see Sky in the upper left of the pic, the white smudge between the two trees.  We were the only ones on the soccer fields and she loves seeing how far she can get from me before I run after her.

I was feeling kinda blah/irritated this morning, no reason really, couldn't put my finger on it.  Figured a run in the sun would fix it, and I did feel better.  But, the tipping point was the labyrinth.  Just being calm, following a path that's already there, and not having to think about anything calmed my heart and cleared my mind.

Lovely way to start the day and get myself back on track.  Looking forward to whatever the rest of the day brings!

--------------------------
Who watched the Boston coverage yesterday?
It's why I didn't post yesterday, all I did really was watch the marathon coverage and track my friends who were running, and that makes for a boring ass blog post!  BTW - Amy finished and beat her time from last year!

How do you reset your mind/attitude when you need an adjustment?
Aside from running I also like a glass of wine and my book, even for just 20 minutes.  Always makes me feel better.

Big 2015 Racing News!!!!!!!!!

Oh my goodness I'm so, so, so, so excited to share my news...but first...

I hope everyone had a lovely Easter!  No matter what you believe, or how you celebrate/recognize the day I hope it was happy.

We spent the morning re-hanging our pictures/decorations.  We packed up a lot of stuff thinking we may list our house, and so we could finish painting the rooms that needed it, but since we are staying put it was time to unpack the last box!  I'm not allowed to hang things on the walls, for good reason, I'm the queen of crooked, but I guess Sky isn't...
Helping Daddy create the family/friends only wall.  Meaning no prints/art work only pics of family and friends and our adventures.

"Yo, whazz up"?  That hat is entirely too much, but she picked it out herself and loves it!

After a morning of hanging pics and cooking we headed to the parents to spend Easter with Mark's family.
She's saying "Happy Easter, Hi Grandpa"!

Fun times, Sky loved hunting for Easter Eggs, but didn't much care about what was in them.  Yummy food, and lovely company!  Ever so grateful for the sun and warmth today!   Ton's more pics on Mark's camera, which got left behind

Ok I can't wait any longer...there is a pretty exciting (to me anyway) update on the Race Bucket List page, but I won't make you click on it to find out what it is...

Santa Barbara Wine Country Half May 2015...here I come, and Michelle too!!!

The only, only way this race would be possible is if we could stay with my SIL who lives in SB.  I connected with her this weekend, and she is more than happy to let us couch surf for a few days! Thankfully I have enough airline miles to get me there and back, so now I'm saving pennies for registration, which is pricey, but going to be totally worth it...WINE tasting, oh and running a beautiful half!

I am so excited!!!!!!  Plus, it's close to my b-day, so it will be the perfect way to celebrate 40!

Ok, I'm totally a for real runner...wanting to race instead of party for my 40th!?!?!  I remember the day's when I used to say, "I'll never run/be a runner".  Jokes on me!

----------------

Anyone run the Santa Barbara Wine Country Half?  Any Feedback/heads up?

Who else is getting up early tomorrow to watch the Boston Marathon coverage?
I have Amy's bib number, and have several other peeps running, so I'm getting up to watch/track what I can!

How far out do you plan your race schedule?
I'm always looking about a year ahead, the only way I can afford to keep racing on a single income is to get the best price possible, which almost always means opening day registration.

Thankful Thursday

I try really hard to have one day a week that Sky and I get to stay home and just be.  We may stay in PJ's all day and skip brushing our hair, or we may go play at the park or get coffee and a scone.  Regardless of what we do it's always unplanned and usually ends up being my favorite day of the week.

Today I'm thankful for the little moments of heart melting joy that result from slowing down and being in the moment with my tater tot.

We laid on the bed and talked and cuddled for over an hour.  We talked about how much fun preschool is going to be, that she gets to fly on a plane in a few weeks, and we examined all the lovely colors and squares on the quilt.

You can see her head sticking out of the covers in the top right of the photo.

We played a bit too.  She loves hiding under the blankets and pretending she's asleep, then we rolled around a bit and wrestled and worked up an appetite for crackers and apples.

Blurry, but we were rolling around.

I know that in about 10 years (give or take 9 years) the last thing she'll want to do is lay in bed and talk about life with me, so I'll take every second of it I can get now!

How was your Thursday?

Tell me one thing  you're thankful for today!

CW-X Stabilyx Tights Review

I am so excited to share my review of the CW-X Tights I was given to test out!  I have been CW-X curious for a long time.  But, I've never pulled the trigger and tried them.  So, when the Fleet Feet Tacoma store manager offered me, on behalf of the CW-X rep, a free pair to try I was over the top excited!

For the record the only commitment I made was to try them and report back to the store my thoughts.  The rep (don't even know their name) didn't even know I had a blog, there were zero requests that I post here or anywhere else about the tights.  I'm choosing to do so because I love them, and want people to know they are worth every single penny, more actually!
How cool are these?!  Love all the color!

I highly, highly, highly encourage you to check out the CW-X site as there is a ton of really great info regarding compression/conditioning wear in general, and CW-X specifically.
I was given the CW-X 3/4 Length Stabilyx tights which retail at $90.00.  The technical info from the tag (booklet really):

Featuring the latest new patented Support Web design, the Stabilyx Tight provides optimum Targeted Support to both the lower back/core area and the knee joint and surrounding muscles for greater overall stability and power.

CW-X features two extraordinary fibers: Coolmax and Lycra.  Coolmax moves moisture instantaneously from the body to the fabric's outer surface where it evaporates at twice the speed of cotton.  Lycra possesses the unique ability to stretch yet retain its shape.

The Support Web:
-Acts as an exoskeleton to provide extra core support
-Stabilizes the knee joint
-Supports quadriceps muscles
-Improves movement efficiency and precision
-Engages hamstring and calf muscles
-Reduces muscle fatigue

Yep, I wear them with my compression socks, laugh if you must.

First, keep in mind that anything over 8 miles is hard for me.  I run 3 times a week, and a 10 mile week is average.  Half training spikes that, but lets just say running is not kind to my body...I really have to work at it, and ice baths are a must for anything 8 to 10 or over, or I hurt and gimp around for a few days.
All those tracks between the color stripes is the most amazing support ever!

I did a 6, 12, 10, 8 and several 3 to 5 mile runs in these bad boys and have washed them a ton.  I also wore them after the Whidbey Island Half as a recovery tool since it's billed as in-run support, or recovery support.  I wanted to experience both so I could give a complete review!  I also refused to read anything about them before running in them so I cold be sure of forming my own opinion.

Ok, I did read the directions to put them on...holy compression...I realized I had no idea how to put my pants on without directions!

The first run I did was a 6 mile run and I was so pleased with how easy the normally really hard hill felt.  It's a loop I run regularly and dread one hill in specific.  But, this time it felt like the tights were doing the running for me and I floated up that hill!
Rear view...it really does compress everything!

The real test came on the 12 and 10 mile runs and let me say that I was not disappointed.  Not a single ice bath was needed after my two longest runs, and that is amazing let me tell you.  Nothing hurt after those runs, legs, joints, knees, hips...everything felt really great.  My legs were tired after the longer runs, but not sore.  I was able to play with Sky and not gimp around like I have in the past.  It usually takes a few days to get back to normal, but these tights took it down to a few hours...specifically the hours I was running.  Once I peeled them off I showered, and was ready to be all-in mommy.  AMAZING!!!

I've always wondered if CW-X would help give support to my bad knee (dislocated it in HS and had surgery...bothers me on and off ever since) and make it feel stronger during long runs, and you know what my bad knee didn't hurt at all wearing the CW-X tights!  More importantly my knee felt protected.

It really does feel like the tights are moving my legs for me.  They also have a higher waist line so it holds the core/tummy in nice and tight.  I really like that feature since I don't like feeling anything jiggle while running.  It's kind of like everything from my waist to knee's are being hugged and held firmly in place.

    Recovering after Whidbey Island.

I wanted to test them out as a recovery tool (I ran in a skirt for Whidbey...my usual race uniform) and changed into them after finishing the Whidbey Half.  My hips were jacked after that one due to the slanted roads.  I was so uncomfortable, but once I changed into the tights my hips stopped hurting, they liked the being hugged feeling!  I wore them for 4'ish hours, and while I think they helped I was still pretty sore after that race.  I think they work much better worn during a run rather than after.

While I love these tights and am a totally believer/will spend every penny that comes my way on CW-X tights/shorts, there is one thing I don't love.

The lack of a zipper pocket.  There is one small pocket on the inside of the front band, but it would maybe fit my key, and with the compression being so tight I don't want key imprint.  I get that a zipper pocket would maybe interfere with the compression ability, but it's a little frustrating to have to run with a belt (I love my belt, but hate wearing a belt period) just to accommodate my ID, Key and chap-stick.

But, even with the lack of a zipper pocket I'm a fan and convert.  I absolutely love everything about CW-X!  Can't wait to get a pair of full length tights (next winter maybe) so I have compression for my shins!

A BIG thank you to CW-X for giving me a pair of really cool colorful tights to test out!  A BIG thank you as well to Angela at Fleet Feet for thinking of me as a test subject!  I feel spoiled and blessed all at the same time!

P.S. - They wash and hang dry perfectly!  No funny smells or signs of wear or tear.

Anyone else out there a CW-X fan?

Boston Strong & Other Stuff

I can't post today and not at least mention the events that took place one year ago.

Simply put my thoughts are with all those that were there (injured or not, present when the bombs went off or not...it's still a footnote to the marathon experience regardless of finishing/not finishing etc), with all those (runners, volunteers, spectators, anyone in Boston that day) that are recovering from physical/mental/emotional injuries, and with the families that lost loved ones.

It's what I'll be thinking about during my run this evening.

---------------

Just a note - I changes the name of my Instagram account so that it ties in with the blog, and takes my personal name off the account.  The old link won't work, but all the old pictures are there since it's the same account, just with a new name.  You can follow brokentequila (me!) on Instagram at: http://instagram.com/brokentequila the link is also to the Right.

I have been reading so many blogger safety posts lately and #1 tip is that all the social media accounts tied to the blog should be the blog name, not your personal name, so I decided to make the change.

P.S. - No I have not had any issues/scares...just following sound advice.

----------------

Over the weekend Michelle and I had the pleasure of staying at the Fort Casey Inn on Whidbey Island.  Originally built as officer housing prior to the Civil War (according to the plaque in our cabin) or the First World War (according to the website), so I don't know which it is, but leaning towards the Civil War based on the decor etc.  Regardless is was the most cost effective lodging we could find on the Island that was close to the start/finish line.

I had no idea what we were in store for since the confirmation email made it clear it was pretty basic with power, but no other outside contact (TV, Radio, WiFi).  Sounded great to me because I love nothing more than a good book for hours on end, but turns out they have upgraded a bit and there was WiFi, and the alarm clocks in the rooms had AM/FM.

It was all pretty basic, but fully functioning with electric heat, microwave in the kitchen along with all the other "normal" kitchen stuff.  And the view was amazing!

My room...the bed's were really firm!

Love the claw-foot bathtub...we didn't use it, but it was still a cool feature.

Michelle's Room.

Aside from the firm beds and really old plumbing (lets be honest it could hardly handle two runners pre-race) it was a charming and very quiet place to stay.  It would actually be fun to go back with the families and make use of the hiking trails, and bring our discovery passes along so we can explore the parks near the Inn.  I would totally stay there again!

A few more non-race pics from the weekend...

I thought it was funny my GPS had the car driving on the water.

Liquid carb loading at lunch the day before.  First time I have every had a drink (had a glass of wine with dinner later that night as well, along with lot's of water all day long) the day before a race, and you know what I couldn't tell a difference.

We visited the start line the day before to scope out parking and make sure we knew where to go.   Nice little beach next to the festivities.

This was a random little park we found and it ended up being a nice little spot to spread a blanket and read for a while before heading off to dinner.  Very relaxing!

I have to say I feel pretty great today!  I usually don't run with the group Tuesday Night after running a half, but I am tonight, because I feel that good, and like I'm ready to run again.  If this is what 39 feels like then I'm going to have a very good year!  ;-)

---------------

Anyone else drink beer, wine, other alcohol before a race?

I usually don't drink any alcohol 5 to 7 days leading up to a race, but I didn't do that this time around.  I had wine with dinners during the week and the beer and wine the day before.  But, I also made an effort to drink a ton of water too.  I felt the best I ever have for a race this time around, so who knows if drinking or not makes a huge difference.  There are a lot of other factors that go into how you feel race day.

Whidbey Island Half Re-Cap

Let's get the details out of the way...we did it!  Finished in 2:23:xx which was faster than I anticipated.  Not the fastest Half Michelle and I have run together, but not the slowest either.

Pre-Race...killing time before the start.  Half Fanatics in the house!!!!!  (runners have the best legs...yep just gave myself and Michelle props)!

Michelle got it together for this race with only 3 weeks notice, and very little mileage on her legs.  I know miles 10 - 13.34 (it's a long course!) were challenging, but she stuck with it and got it done.  I tell you those last miles were the hardest as far as the course goes.  Hills, out and back, running past the finish line and hearing finishers being announced as you run past...yep it was hard, really hard.

While I had the advantage of 10 weeks of training, and felt pretty great physically (mentally was not loving running past the finish for an out and back)...I knew it was getting harder and harder for Michelle, but she hung in there and got it done.  I'm so proud of her, total gut check time and she did it!  I don't say (type) that with surprise at all...I knew she could do it, but I knew it would be hard so I'm extra, extra proud of her!

I almost don't even know how to review this one because it was such a great experience.  Fair warning this Half, with perfect weather (and maybe even without perfect weather), is going to make you want to run a full.  Just be ready to come home and register for a full marathon after this!  (And, no I did not register for a full, nor do I plan on doing so...that hasn't changed for me).

The Pros:
-The Weather - So I know this was totally a chance thing, the organizers have zero control over the weather.  I suspect that had this been a windy/rainy day it would have been much less pleasant and a very, very different experience for us.  It was sunny, but no too hot.  I actually had a long sleeve shirt on before the start to keep warm, but ditched it right before we crossed the timing mat.  Michelle didn't, and while she had goose bumps she wasn't too cold as long as we stayed in the sun.  There were a few times it felt like the sun was beating down on us due to the lack of shade, but just as it would start to border on too much we would hit a wooded section and have shade to cool things off.

-Bathrooms - There were the park bathrooms as well as plenty of port o potties.  We waited in lines of 3 to 4 people tops which is pretty good in my book!

-Aid Stations - Perfectly spaced!  Not only did they start early (mile 2...the advantage of there being a 5K and 10K) they were spaced about every 3 miles after that.  The two stations that offered GU were perfectly spaced, and the last aid station that offered GU was the out and back section, so you hit it going and coming back which was really nice.

-Packet Pick-Up/Expo - Very well organized.  Big enough to be interesting, but not so large that it was overwhelming (that's what she said...bahahaha...sorry Mark has totally warped my sense of humor!).  We were in and out super easy.  Didn't even have to wait in line to get our packets/shirts.

-Communication - It was amazing.  There were several (but not too many) emails the weeks leading up to the race, with all the information/details I wanted, needed, and felt anxious about.  This was easily the calmest I felt going into a race because everything was spelled out clearly.  Being an out of towner, since it's an island I'm guessing most of the runners are out of town, the organizers addressed all the unknowns for those that were traveling, and that really helped me feel like we were in good hands.

Running this stretch I totally mentally checked out.  It was long and straight (the kind of running I don't like at all) but the view totally sucked me in and made it fly by.

-Route- Well what can I say about this.  It was amazing!  From the vibrant green farm lands/fields to the ocean views, and the mountain peaks it was simple breathtaking.  The views made up for the complaints I have.   More importantly the views made it seem almost easy.  I enjoyed (almost) every step because it was so beautiful.

The above view is what is behind us in the below in-race selfie.   Selfie Photo Credit - Michelle!

About half way give or take a mile or two...I forget exactly.

-Shirts/Medals/Goodie Bag - So I don't have a pic of the tech shirt, but it's bad a$$!  I love the shirt, but sadly it looks horrific on me, so I gave mine to Michelle.  Why don't they ever run true to size (or look good on girls with bigger chests?)  Anyway, the medals are awesome (too lazy to take a close up) totally fitting it had a Bald Eagle on it since we saw them every time we looked up!  I love that the goodie bags had full size product in them, very well done!

Cons:
-The Roads - They were totally slanted.  Every single one of them were very slanted and it was really hard to find anything somewhat flat to run on.  The first 10 miles were slanted (for the most part) to the left and let me tell you my knee and hip were feeling it.  We both kept swerving around trying to find anything flatish to run on.  There was one trail through a park that was flat and a gravel path that was flat, but that maybe made 1 mile total of flat running. The last 3+ miles were slanted to the right, which was a bit of relief but by that point still not helpful.

-It's over 13.1 - In fact the website says it's 13.34, but if you run a perfect tangent it's 13.1.  Umm...the only runners that have a chance of running a perfect tangent are the leaders.  The rest of us are left running what is a very long Half!

-The Last 3 miles - They are already the hardest part of a Half right?  So why, why, why make us run past the finish line, hearing all the celebration etc to head out on an absolutely miserable out and back?  It's the hilliest part of the course and just felt like it took forever.  It's a mental game at that point...every step out you know you have to repeat...but adding in the hills was just rough.  (Overall still one of the "easiest" courses I've run though...so it's all relative).

Still amazing views the last 3 miles!

-Food Tent - Seriously the line to get in to the food tent was stupid long.  So long in fact that even though I needed food we skipped it and opted to get on the ferry and eat on the mainland.  There has to be a better way to handle that aspect.

-Full Marathon Leaders - This is more a complaint on their behalf because it didn't have a negative impact on me at all.  But, I will say at the point (based on when they start and when the Half starts and average pace of winners etc) that the leaders catch us is tight.  I know the organizers have no control over what pace anyone runs, but there are some serious pinch points, and some stretches of what should be single track (just like girls who can't pee alone some can't run alone either...for the record Michelle and I run single file when we need to/when the course calls for it), the leaders were struggling to weave in and out (the motorcycle leading the full should have been in front of the leader honking, not behind him!) and barking at runners, most of who have both earphones in, that they were trying to pass.  The leaders caught us at their mile 23, so I'm guessing having to yell at people to move over was energy they would rather have not had to exert.  The only upside is it was really inspiring/exciting to see them fly by, those guys were hauling some serious a$$!

We did it!

All in all I would highly, highly recommend this race!  If you ever have a chance to run Whidbey Island Half do it (can't speak to the full, but have heard it's bad a$$ in a good way as well)!  I would/will totally do it again!  Despite the few cons it's still a very unique experience that is totally worth it, and one of the most enjoyable courses to run (even though it's long)!

Nicely done Whidbey Island!

I'll share more in the next day or two about lodging/experience on the island and how I felt/am feeling post race.  For now this post is long enough and I'm still pretty worn out despite 10 hours of sleep last night.
