P.S. - due to the strong reaction from the person that talked smack about my sister she thought it best to remove the post, so the THIS link below won't work. Her site is still worth checking out though HERE
I have to get this off my chest...it's been bothering me for hours.
(Some may find this post odd given the complex situation surrounding our relationship, but given that situation we do not have a complicated relationship. The contact and communication may be limited, but she is my sister and I love and admire her to pieces. Bottom line, no matter what I love her simple and uncomplicated.)
So, even though Saturday is our no technology day, that rule gets broken. Usually while waiting in line at Costco or something like that. I admit I hop online, on my phone, and read my blog lists. Well, I was behind a few days and didn't read THIS post on my sisters blog until today.
I am beyond ticked off! How dare anyone say anything the least little bit negative about her running/pace. (Or anyone's running for that matter!)
That is not what running and runners should be about! The bottom line is no matter the shape, size, gear, pace, style of a runner there is zero room for judgment or comment about how another person runs. And, there is zero room to comment on a husband and wife running together even if that means one is finishing slower than they would running alone.
It is not anyone else's business! And, at least they are out there running. Who cares if it's a 7 min mile or a 14 min mile.
Maybe it's because she has been my best friend since I was 2 1/2 (she is 2 1/2 years younger) or maybe it's because I know how she grew up, what she went through (no that is not directed at our parents in the least), what it took for her to let herself fall in love and marry her husband, and how hard she works at being the amazing mother and wife that she is.
I also know the agonizing hours of workouts and runs they put in together to loose hundreds of pounds and start leading a healthy life.
I hope the thoughtless person who made the comments can feel my anger radiating all the way down to SanFran! They are lucky I live clear up here in WA!
Sis - You are an amazing, strong woman and runner. You do what you need to, do it your way and (pardon me) F them! The only thing that matters is you, Brian and the kids.
I love you, admire you, and hope that some day I can run the pace you do, for as long as you do.
(I feel so much better...blogs are like magic!)
Oh, and BTW, if you enjoy running blogs her blog is worth checking out. She is so honest and open about her runs, pace, feelings. It's inspiring!

What A Day...
What went right - all the grocery shopping got done and everything got put away...and it was sunny!
What went wrong - traffic, and missing my run.
What's more important than running - being a parent!
Missed my run because we took Sky to the ER. (No worries, she is fine.) She is such a rowdy girl always jumping off things and wrestling with Daddy. She is bound to get hurt at some point right?!
She hurt her arm while playing with Daddy. She was pretty shook up, so we gave her some Tylenol and waited to see how she felt after her nap. She woke up crying (way overboard crying for her) and since nothing was helping we packed her up and headed to the ER thinking something was broke. She was crying just from the pressure of the car seat straps pressing on her shoulder when Mark braked.
Thankfully it was only a partial dislocation (nurse maid elbow...very common according to the ER Dr.), and all the Dr. had to do was pop it back in.
Oh, but that isn't all. In the course of the normal checks they do the Dr. discovered she has a really bad ear infection! We had no idea. I even checked her temp last night because Mark thought she was warm, but was only at 97.1. The ER Dr. was shocked that she hadn't been running a temp or been fussy because her ears are full of yuck and at the bursting point.
So we left with an RX for her ears, but at least her arm wasn't hurting anymore. She was using it to climb on stuff and pick stuff up by the time we left. Meds are now on board for the ears.
I would feel bad about not noticing the ear situation, but aside from having a cold for weeks she has not been acting sick, not running a temp, and even though I limited the play outings, she was still full force around the house and playing outside. She is a strong little girl.
There are pics on Mark's phone from the ER, so will try and get some of those posted. I'm sure they are a little pathetic and a lot cute. Pooh went with us and somehow ended up in a face mask and shield...looked like Hazmat Pooh Bear.
We are offline tomorrow and the three of us are doing a day road trip Sunday. I won't be posting much. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, enjoy your runs and Easter activities!

Thankful Thursday
Today I'm thankful for an unexpected play date with Jodi, Reagan and Harrison. All I hear on non play date days is Reagan, Reagan, REAGAN. Since play date will be missed next week I was really thankful to squeeze one in today.
I'm also thankful for getting all the laundry done, meal planning for the next two weeks done, and the grocery list done. It's even organized with all the produce, meat, and dairy grouped together, and the rest is by aisle. When shopping with a 22 month old you do whatever you need to in order to make it go as quickly and efficiently as possible!
Skype has been a lifesaver lately. Sky can get pretty darn insistent about who she wants, and when they aren't around it can be difficult. There have been several Skype calls to Grandma the last few days that have helped give her something and someone different to interact with.
Mostly I'm thankful that I get to spend every day with this little girl!
Oh, and I would be lying if I didn't admit I'm thankful NCAA basketball is back on today and tomorrow, and that Duke is still in it!!! And, that Sky loves pretty much every sport! She is so my daughter!

Happy Hump Day
Sky and I had a good day today!
It started with a solo run for her and I. There was a large group of stroller mommies who wanted to walk, but no runners. So, Sky and I took the opportunity to scout a new route. It ended up being 3.87, that's .87 over the target distance for the stroller group, I got lost, and there were a couple of hills I was not expecting.
And, that is why I will not lead the group on a route I have not run myself first. A few changes and not getting lost and it will be a good route.
I was loving the sun and apparently I was running at just the right speed to put Sky to sleep. She was snoring like crazy by the time I got back to the store.
Since I didn't end up going to Seattle as planned I was able to take the pants back that I was unsure of while Sky was at the parents this afternoon. I ended up with this outfit instead.
Shout out to John in Point Of View at Nordstrom. He was amazing! I told him I was tired of the jeans and cute top look that I, and everyone else, fall back on for outings. (While I technically ended up with jeans, they are olive colored and cropped, something totally different for me. And, the shirt is striped, something else I never do, and multicolored so will go with other things. I have several other tops that will work with the pants too!) Anyway, John kept bringing in complete outfits with accessories and everything, telling me what to put with which pants and what combos to try until I found what was right. He also told me which shoes to wear to dress it up or down. There were so many cool tops he put me in, but I went for what would work with the most things I already own. Making the most of my $$ that way.
Any time I have a little spending money and need some cloths I will be visiting John first from now on! He added me to his book...makes me feel kind of special. ;-)
I sort of wish he lived in my closet and could tell me what to put on every day!
I am way tired tonight from having such a good day though. Not sure if it is getting back into the swing of running or what. Or, could be I only had one cup of coffee this morning before starting my day. Who knows. Ready for bed and it's not even 9:30 yet.
Good news is my foot doesn't hurt any worse after running like normal this week. It's still a little sore, but it's really hard to rest a foot injury. Even if I don't run I still have to walk around day to day. Overall I'm happy with how I felt, and happy with the pace I was able to keep Tuesday night and today. Time off usually kills my pace and endurance.
P.S. - I forgot to mention in the last post that I was able to add money to my Starbucks card with my birthday money. I'm not a go get coffee every day person, but it's nice to know I can go get it when I'm craving it, or walking with Jodi! :)

Then we came home and spent a lot of time playing on the new to us "big girl bed". It's not a change I wanted to rush into, but it was given to us and we have limited storage space. So, it's in her room and when she is ready she will make the change. Personally I like the containment of the crib, and she isn't trying to climb out yet, so I'm happy to wait as long as possible.
In the meantime we will talk it up and get her excited about it and see what happens.
Since I didn't end up going to Seattle as planned I was able to take the pants back that I was unsure of while Sky was at the parents this afternoon. I ended up with this outfit instead.
The outfit looks way better on! The pants are THESE Wit & Wisdom pants in Olive. The top is THIS Caslon shirred V-Neck. Totally casual, yet able to dress up with heels and jewelry. I am a happy girl. Good Morning
This is how Sky wakes up...
If you look close you can see she has her pj's unzipped, but the top button is still buttoned and her feet are still zipped in. She must have needed a bit of a breeze?
I love that she wakes up that happy every morning!
I totally forgot to post yesterday. Got busy and it just didn't happen. I ended up not running, and did P90X instead. My foot was feeling good and I just didn't want to ruin it by running. I figured one more day of low impact would only help. Run club tonight though...it's not going to be fun. I know I have lost some conditioning and speed with all this rest. Oh well...I will get it back!
I posted a few weeks ago that I received some early birthday money. I have been not so patiently waiting for the ordered items to arrive so I could do a birthday goodies post. Finally today the last of the items arrived!
The goods...
Not pictured- neon pink calf sleeves...they sent me compression socks instead of the sleeve, so am getting that worked out. Also not pictured is the Tacoma Narrows 1/2 marathon entry fee. (Race fee's are so much $$$. I won't complain much though, no one is forcing me to run.)
Usually I buy myself running stuff, but the downfall to that is I get to a point that the only clothing I have is running stuff and then I'm struggling to put outfits together or wearing the same two outfits for parties, dinner out, and other non-running events. So, this time I focused on the non running side of life, for the most part.
Pictured:
-Running shoes and Sole inserts...now I have two pair to rotate which will be key when 1/2 training starts!
-Okabashi flip flops in black and orange. I live in flip flops as much as possible, but am finding that flat shoes don't help my feet feel good with all the running, so I got these because they have great arch support, can be tossed in the dishwasher, and have a 2 year warranty. Went with black and orange because between the two I have every summer outfit covered. Check out their site HERE
-Two brow pencils from MAC...the color I use is their most popular and they are always out, so I got two since I had spending money. I also got my favorite lip gloss and foundation at Bare Essentials. I was close to being completely out of the foundation...yikes!
-THIS Hit The Trail skirt from Athleta. I have found that while on road trips and hiking a lot of times a skirt is way more comfortable. This skirt has built in shorts, zippered pockets all over the place, and storage pocket on the back that snaps off and has a cross body strap to double as a small purse. In the picture above it's the back of the skirt so you can see the little bag. Super comfortable and super cute! I have two Athleta travel skirts now and anticipate that I will be wearing them all the time, not just for traveling.
-THESE Jolt Chinos from Nordstrom Juniors. I feel like an old woman in the Juniors sections, but it was the only section that had non-jean pants that I liked. I have a few pairs of jeans and wear them all the time. I'm pretty sick of them actually. I wanted cargo pants, or something that I could wear in place of jeans. These fit and look cute, but when I tried them on again today I'm not sure I'm sold on them. I may or may not keep them, but I do know of the 5 other stores I went to looking for pants these were the only ones I found that I even remotely liked. So, may keep them just because I know there isn't much else out there.
-Wrap watch. It was actually a free thing Fancy Frills was offering on their FB page, so I only paid for the shipping and handling. Score! It is super cute and it tells time, bonus. :) Go like them on FB, they have free offers all the time!
And, that is all my birthday stuff from Dad and Grandpa! A big thank you to both of them, I had fun shopping!!!

Quick Post...
Duke is playing, so this is going to be short and sweet.
Has been a really fun weekend full of:
-driving the car around (having to put a new battery in it as the one it had died, but we are good to go now!) I probably look like a big goober driving the car...I just can't stop smiling! I have never had such a nice car, that does so many things for you. For example you set the temp you want and the car heats or cools as needed automatically to keep the car the temp I want it at all times. I feel very spoiled!
-watching NCAA Basketball (broke the no TV rule Saturday...it is March Madness after all)
-Relay For Life auction with friends (Sky spent the night with the Beckham girls and we split the babysitter)
-baby shower for a friend today
-cold but sunny weather all weekend
-no running (I feel fat and lazy, but my foot hurts less and less each day I rest) getting back on track tomorrow though with a 3 (or so) mile shake out run. It's back on schedule this week!
Our first family drive in the car was to a park so Sky (and Mark) could play...
She knows how to slide by herself, and does so all the time, but why do it "by self" when Daddy is there to slide with you?!

It Takes A Village
I have heard that saying so many times in regards to raising children, and never really fully understood it until I had my own little girl to raise.
I always took it to mean that at the playground and play groups we all look out for each others little ones, make sure none are sneaking off or in danger of falling. And, there have been a few times I have helped a strangers kid when they had their hands full with a baby and the older sibling was about to fall off the monkey bars, and some mom's have helped Sky out many times at play to learn.
I also think of it as being able to call family/friends when you need emergency child care, or as they get older their kids know they can call us when they just need a break from Mom and Dad, or need to talk about something they don't want to share just yet with their parents.
We all look out for each other and each others kids.
But, I'm realizing that it's also so much more than that. Mark and I are trying really hard to make the stay at home thing work. Sky is happy, healthy, smart, and she has Mom or Dad around at all times (for better or worse). I love that I'm getting to spend these years with her and am thankful every day.
But, it's not always easy. Thankfully there are people in our life that love us and love Sky and help out with spending money here and there, gifts or items that we want/need and would make Sky's life more fun or enjoyable. From little things like Starbucks gift cards, to bigger things like the jogging stroller.
Well, today a pretty big thing was given to us. You see I have a 10, going on 11 year old car, and it's a car that is starting to have issues on a regular basis, and also has the lowest safety review of any car on the road. Despite the issues I am thankful to have a paid off car, which means it's possible for me to be at home with Sky instead of working. But, it has also been a huge stress factor for Mark knowing Sky and I are driving around in a car that is not safe.
Enter Jan and Gentry, Mark's parents. Jan just got a new car, as it was time for an upgrade. Her old car was 12 years old, and needed a little work to keep going for a few more years. Since her job requires driving clients around she opted to get a new car, and as a result gave us her old car.
Yep, you read that correctly they gave us their car a 2000 Lexus with something I'm super, super, super excited about...automatic locks!!! Do you know what a pain it has been juggling Sky, groceries etc. and not having automatic locks?!
And, since we didn't have the money for the repairs Dad helped out with that part. Now Sky and I have a safe car to drive and I have automatic locks along with a lot of other really cool bells and whistles that I have never had in a car before! Seriously I have always had the bargain basement car with no special features, so this feels very grown up!
Not the best pics, but what I have for now...
The village of family and friends that surround and love us is pretty amazing. Thank you Jan and Grentry, and Dad for helping us get into a safer car. I am so very excited, we are headed out for a drive right now.
Love you guys, and everyone else that makes this stay at home thing work for us!

Thankful Thursday
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!!
It's an old picture, but one I like!
Today I'm thankful for you! You have always been there for me, and now for Mark and Sky too. I love how excited you get about spending time with Sky, and while this may sound spoiled or greedy I trust you to know exactly what I mean, I love seeing how giddy like a little kid you get about buying stuff for her (well, for me too!).
You always let me know how proud you are of the large and small accomplishments in my life and offer support in so many different ways. I appreciate and love you, and am thankful you are my dad!
I wish you the best day off today, you work hard and deserve some down time!
Love you!

First Day Of Spring...Boo!
Today's weather had me so very confused. Dark storm clouds with rain and wind one second then bright sunny blue sky the next. All. Day. Long. I'm betting that right when we start our movie tonight the power goes out because of the wind!
I don't bail on runs due to weather, so despite the crazy rain I headed out for Stroller Group, and had one other runner show up with her little boy. A little over a mile in we turned a corner and there was crazy wind and rain blowing into our faces, and soaking her little one. She doesn't have a rain cover, thank goodness Sky is fully enclosed in her stroller!
I'm not going to lie, when she said she needed to cut it short and head back because of not having a rain cover I was more than happy to be done! Of course we had to go uphill all the way back and into the wind and I was wet through every layer of clothing I had on. But, we got 1.68 miles in so that is good at least. Sky just kept shouting rain, rain, rain over and over.
There was a group of walkers as well and they made it back to the store right behind us after cutting their walk short. It was just too crazy!
It felt good to get a little bit of running in though, shake out the legs a bit, test out the foot. All seems to be well.
Rest day tomorrow, which actually means stretching and foam rolling, but I'll be doing that while watching basketball! I filled out my brackets and of course have Duke winning it all. :)
Public Service Announcement - Did you all see that Lululemon recalled their yoga pants? Apparently they are see-through. A little too much hoo haw exposure. So, if you have any of their yoga pants check out their website for details on how to exchange or get your money back. Thankfully their winter running pants are thicker so my pants are A OK!
Since Mark and Sky are both still sick, seem to be getting a little better though, there is a lot of sprite and hydrating going on. Sprite is a total treat for Sky she maybe gets a drop from a can once a week if that. Today I gave her some in her own cup...I think it's safe to say she was happy.
I don't bail on runs due to weather, so despite the crazy rain I headed out for Stroller Group, and had one other runner show up with her little boy. Cozy in her stroller this morning with her Mickey peaking out.

Pretty sure she was expecting water.

Happy Birthday Jodi!!!
A Very Happy Birthday to Jodi! I love our weekly (when no one is sick) play dates, and can't wait for our walks to Starbucks to get back on track! Thank you for being your wonderful outgoing self, and for coming up that first day in Stroller Fit and walking away with my phone number. I'm a better person for being able to call you my friend! I wish you all sorts of fun and adventure in the next year!
I'm bummed I don't get to see Jodi today, but Sky is still sick, and Mark decided Sky shouldn't be sick alone, so he kissed her and is now sick as well. Good thing they like snuggling with each other because that's what they are doing a lot of. And, watching home renovation shows, which Sky seems to like.
Actually I think Sky feels a little better today, she is a bit more chipper than yesterday. Still not taking her out and about and skipping Play To Learn just to let the germs clear out.
I see a day of taking care of my babe and my baby. :)
Sky decided to put her pants on "by self" today...
...she needs some more practice I think.
I hope everyone has a wonderful day today!
P.S. - So excited to run tomorrow. I'm either going to be super slow from taking a week off, or blaze through the run on fresh legs. Oh, wait the forecast is wind and rain, so will probably be slow running uphill, into the wind both ways with sideways rain. Oh well, at least I will be running again! :)

It's Done Now...
Before I get to anything to do with me I have to share this blog with you all. Do yourself a favor and go read it. It's worth it, even if you are not a runner, it's worth it.
Every so often I start to wonder how long me pushing Sky on runs will last, enter this blog and a guy who wins a marathon pushing his 6 year old in a stroller. Oh, and he has brain cancer.
Yeah I will never complain about my life or running ever again. Ok, we all know that is not 100% true, but next time I want to stop and walk because I'm tired or have a pity party because we ran out of wine I will check myself hard core, and think about what this guy is doing!

Ok...on to my life. I did it...sent in the registration for the last of the three 1/2's I'm doing to qualify for Half Fanatics. Even though I set goals I feel like it's all up in the air and subject to last minute changes until the cold hard cash leaves my wallet. All three are paid for, so that means no turning back. I don't care if I have to crawl on hands and knees to finish the last one, I'm doing it and I will be a Half Fanatic by the end of summer!
It is a beautiful sunny day out and I so, so, so want to run, even just a short little 1 miler, but I'm sticking to resting until Wednesday. My training log the last week is so sad looking! With Sky being sick it's probably better to just chill with her and keep her happy anyway. We did sneak out to Costco this morning though...just to get out of the house and pick up a few things we needed.
A few pics from our day today...
Not a fan of the sun in her face. Spent the entire time in the car with her hands over her eyes. What about sunglasses you ask...she has them, but she refuses to wear them. So I get fussy girl peaking out between her fingers.
Such a big girl insisting on brushing her teeth all by herself. There just isn't much of my baby girl left in her and it breaks my heart and makes me smile all at the same time. She is growing up so fast and I'm having so much fun watching it happen day-by-day!

Sick Again!
That's right, we had one week of Sky being healthy and she is sick again. :( She went to bed healthy and happy last night, woke up this morning with a raging cold that has gotten worse and worse as the day goes on.
Aside from that though it has been a pretty great few days. I had a truly lovely day Friday. I will post more about it later when I can add pics, but Sky and I spent the morning shopping with my early birthday money from Dad and Grandpa. I had a list and Sky was a trooper hitting all the stores I needed to get to. I also ordered a number of things online, so am really looking forward to the mail this week!
Friday night we made birthday dinner for Marks brother Brian, and lucky for us his dinner is one of our favorite things! Steak!!! We splurged a little and got really good ones. Mark grilled and I made mushroom risotto and chimichuri sauce. I also scored a really good bottle of wine for a really great mark downed price. Thank you Brian for having a birthday!
Saturday was our technology free day, which we have concluded is our favorite day of the week! That evening we went to Josh's surprise graduation party...he finished his BA! He has a FT job, wife, 3 kids and still pulled a 4.0, nice job Josh!!! (Still no sign of Sky being sick...we would not have taken her to the party and exposed all the other kids to her cold if we had known. She was handing out kisses, so I apologize for anyone who ends up with sick kiddos.)
Today was a baby shower for a friend, thank you Mark and Brian for hanging with Sky, so I could go alone. Made a very quick stop by the Beckham's St. P Day party and came home to make dinner and snuggle my little girl.
What hasn't happened...running. I hate taking too many days off in a row because it is so hard to start again, but my foot is feeling much better, so the rest has done what I needed it to.
A Sky pic....
Her new thing...Steelers Mickey, and Steelers Mickey must go everywhere that Pooh goes, and sometimes Pooh even gets left behind. That is a huge, huge deal! Thank you uncle Bob and aunt Michelle for her new travel partner!

Thankful Thursday
I'm thankful that Jodi let's me make a mess in her kitchen! For play date today I thought it sounded like fun to bake something, so we gave these Strawberry Shortcake Muffins a go, and they look kinda funny, but taste pretty good.
Since I forgot the plain Greek yogurt at home we used her strawberry honey Greek yogurt instead, and we used frozen strawberry's and ended up blending them into the mix since they were wet.
The verdict, they don't taste bad, they don't taste particularly strawberry flavored though. They are a little spongy, not sure that's the right word, but I'm going with it.
It's a breakfast muffin and the whole point was for us to have quick and easy options in the morning and these totally fit the bill. I think the girls ate 3 of them which makes them a hit with the toddler crowd! I'm a fan of anything that makes life with a 21 month old quick and easy!
I'm also thankful that everyone was healthy enough for a play date. It had been a few weeks and we were all missing each other!

Naked with a hat, how she spends 90% of her time around the house. And, I know that with a diaper on she isn't totally naked, but last time I let that happen she peed on the carpet so for now diapers are a must. It's close enough to naked to make her happy and that's all that matters.

No Sun Burn Here
...not even a chance to get one, and that is the up side of living and running in rainy Washington! I would rather run in the cold/cool weather and be able to take clothes off as I heat up rather than be hot, because you can only take so much off before your running naked right?!
At least that's what I will keep telling myself as I read about sunny runs taking place in CA. :) I'm really not all that jealous about it, just ready for some more consistent sun around here.
After feeling blah all day yesterday about running Michelle and I laced up and got our butt's out there and ran with the 3 mile group. I'm so glad we got some miles in. I felt great once I got started, and am looking forward to the stroller run today.
The best part was no headlamps last night, and we did a little longer route since it's not dark! The old route was 2.9, new route is 3.1. Not a huge difference, but when trying to beat the dark during the dark months it makes a difference.
Taking a week off after today. I need to give my foot a chance to stop hurting...I can't afford to go into 1/2 training and running 3 1/2's with an injury. Going to take the time now to rest and heal. I will however be doing lot's of pilates and yoga, and ordering a few different kinds of socks to see if I can find a bister free option.
Sky Pic...
She loved having Grace and Kiera spend the night Saturday...when they left Sunday it was a complete code red melt down. Makes me wish...but no, things are pretty perfect the way they are. :)

Blahhh
So don't feel like running in the rain tonight, just not feeling it at all. But, I'm going. Will probably run with the 3 mile group...my foot is still bruised, but doesn't hurt while running. Trying to balance getting the runs in, but not hurting it further. Almost able to give up the headlamp! That's the nice thing about springing forward, it's not dark as early!
Can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to some summer running!!! Kinda ticks me off to see other runners blogging about how nice the weather is for their runs. I'm tired of being wet and cold 90% of the time.
Enough blahhh...how about some Sky pics to pick things up around here?!

She is so hood! :)
She is happiest with no cloths on, a hat and our shoes on.
Loves her stacking toy!
Playing at the park last Friday...was desperately trying to get her to stay back from the edge...it didn't really work.
Almost every time I take her out and about in her Steelers gear I get asked "how can you do that to her?" It kinda pisses me off. There are parents out there that do terrible things to their children/other children and your going to say something to me about her being in Steelers gear?! Get over it!
Speaking of football...we have ESPN free agency coverage on...can't wait to see how it all shakes out!

Race Recap - Foothills Dash 2013
What a fun run this was! Price $16 for the 10K, there was also a 5K and 1 mile kid dash. For the price I'm not sure why every runner in the area isn't doing this race!
There were a few hundred people at most. It's very small, but very well organized. Packet pick-up was smooth, the shirts (even though I didn't get one) were way cool, the bathroom line got long right before start time, but I don't think it was enough to complain about, and there was plenty of oranges and granola bars at the finish line.
The course is beautiful running along the river with views of Mt. Rainier, very flat, passing other runners was no problem at all. It's a certified course with aid stations at the 5K turn around and the 10K turn around.
The only complaint I can come up with is no timing chip. I like having that official finish time rather than a stop watch and taking the bottom half of my bib as I cross the finish. Also not sure if they are emailing the results or posting on the FB page. Regardless I kinda don't care...that is what GPS watches are for right?! My watch said 56 and some change, my goal was under an hour and I did it, so I'm very happy!

Elya and I pre-race. We both PR'd!!!
One of the thing I love about running with Elya is that she is totally ok with each of us running the race we need to for ourselves. We stayed together until a little over halfway and then settled into the pace that worked for us and ran alone.
I have found that no matter what the distance is there is a point in every race that you just want to be done or start thinking oh just stop and walk what difference does it make. Miles 4.5 to almost 6 were hard. I was pushing my pace, alone, and since I didn't know the course (even though it was an out and back I still didn't really know where I was in relation to the finish line) I started to feel like it was never going to end because I had no idea where the finish line was. I had my watch and it tells me the miles so I know in numbers how far I had to go, but visually nothing looked familiar and since it was a small race there was no fanfare leading up to the finish.
Three things got me through:
1 - My entire outfit/gear was given to me. Shirt/skirt/socks/MP3 player from Dad. He either picked them out himself or I got them with $$ he gave me. GPS watch and shoes were from Fleet Feet, one of the benefits of organizing the stroller group for them. Running with all that love and support kept me going.
2 - Heidi, instructor from the stroller fit class I took at the Y, used to yell at us that she wanted us to run until we literally could not put one foot in front of the other. "I can't means you can't physically move!" I kept hearing Heidi's voice asking, "Can you keep putting one foot in front of the other? Yes...then move your ass!" For the record I never heard her say ass in class, but during the race (and during a lot of my runs in general) that it what I hear her say.
3 - The young kid running in front of me. At some point I started thinking I could catch him and it gave me something to focus on. It forced me to keep pushing my pace. It started a chain reaction, once I was past him I kept picking the next target and passing them. Once I pass someone I'm determined to stay in front of them.
I checked my watch more this race than any I have done before. I had a plan, I knew what pace I wanted us to be at the first few miles and what not to drop below so we would finish in under an hour. It was good to know that when I felt like we were running 8:15 we were indeed running 8:15. How fast my body and mind felt we were running always matched what the GPS said we were running. It's nice to know that I'm getting comfortable enough in my stride and mechanics that it's becoming more intuitive. During the longer runs, 10 plus miles, I hate checking the watch...I just don't want to know, so feeling it becomes more important.
I will absolutely be doing this one again next year! I have a PR to beat now! :)
And, since it's been a few days with no Sky pic here you go...
Awesome table manners no?

Oh It's On Now
I can post from my phone! Would have been nice to have this set up yesterday for race update.
We both PR'd, I finished in 56 something! More later!

From The Kitchen & Concert Review
I have a follow up tip from the Baked Orange Chicken Wings Recipe - I made it the other night with the orange marmalade and we didn't care for it much. Was way too sweet and sticky. I highly recommend fresh squeezing the same amount of fresh orange juice instead of the marmalade!
Now on to the exciting stuff!!! Michelle and I saw Miguel and Alicia Keys at the Wamu Theater in Seattle. It was amazing!!!
First of all the Wamu is small, only a few thousand people, I heard 5,000 but don't know if that is accurate, regardless it's small, so there really isn't a bad seat in the place.
Second this was such a grown-up concert. Very sophisticated crowd (how did I get in?!) I didn't see a single drunk person, and people were dressed up very nicely. You could tell this was a classy night out for most of the people.
The lay-out was great, short lines for shirts, drinks, and bathrooms. Well, actually the bathroom line was long, but moved fast, and we never had to wait in line because our seats were close to the exit nearest the bathrooms so it wasn't a problem for us at all.
As for the talent...WOW. We saw Miguel when he opened for Usher, and at that time he was really new, only did a few songs and was the typical shirt off I'm sexy kind of thing. Last night he was so classy sexy that I could hardly stand it. He has grown into his music and style and is doing his thing, and it works, it really works!
I was less excited about Alicia. I like her, but not the own CD's, follow her career type of like her. I was looking forward to seeing her, but not crazy excited like I have been for other concerts. I have to say girl knows how to put on a show, and her voice is better live than recorded, not many artists can say that. I loved that she didn't have any wardrobe changes, she mopped her face with a towel on stage, she had just enough lighting and dancers to make it fun, but was pretty low-key and sophisticated about it.
I will admit she made me cry and that is a first. I have never cried at a concert before. She sung the song her little boy asks her to sing when he is going to bed and it was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. Really amazing.
While I was dazzled by her voice the runner in me was thinking, she can sing, but can she run? Check it out: Alicia Runs Girl can run too! :)
I'm so thankful Michelle asked me to go with her. It was fun going to such a grown-up concert. Nice change from our last concert...zero screaming little girls last night!
Now time to hydrate and get ready to PR the 10K tomorrow!!! So excited to run this race and it's going to be sunny! Whatever you are doing this weekend, whatever training run or race, enjoy it!!!

Thankful Thursday
I have said it before, but I'm going to say it again...I am so very, very thankful for my jogging stroller!
The last few weeks she has been sick with a cold and nasty little cough, which means we have been home a lot! But, that doesn't mean that Sky isn't pulling her hair out from being stuck inside. It's also been pretty rainy so playing outside hasn't really been an option. Normally we don't care about that, but when she is sick it seems wrong to let her play in the rain.
Thank goodness for the jogging stroller! The only outings she has really had, aside from the park the other day, have been runs with mommy. Since it's fully enclosed the rain doesn't matter, and with the windows all the way around she loves watching things fly past as I'm pushing her. It's a great change of pace for both of us! Plus, it means I don't miss the Stroller Group on Wednesday's.
The feeling of freedom I get from having the stroller is priceless! No matter how high gas prices get this summer (I try to drive less during peak gas price season) no matter if my car craps out on us (it feels like a day to day thing as of late)...with the stroller there are plenty of things within running distance from the house. Plus, since it is fully enclosed weather isn't an issue. I run rain, snow, sleet and ice, and so does Sky!
And, I'm pretty sure if I plan a park break in the middle of a run I could get 1 1/2 to 2 hours of running out of her. I have a feeling with three 1/2's this summer I may need to do some of the longer training runs during the week, with Sky, especially once camping and vacation time come around.
Sorry if I sound like a broken record, but Sky and running are two big parts of my day-to-day, stay at home life, and thanks to this stroller the two fit together perfectly. I'm thankful for it, and thankful that my Dad was able to support my running and staying home by getting it for us!
P.S. - Another thing I'm thankful for today...Michelle invited me to go to the Alicia Keys and Miguel concert tonight in Seattle with her! I LOVE Miguel...he opened for Usher when we saw him and Miguel had our attention for sure! I will be breaking my no drinks past Wednesday rule when I have a weekend race, but I think it will be worth it. I will just hydrate like crazy Friday so I'm ready to PR Saturday!
P.P.S - Running with a stroller tip #1. Make sure the tires are pumped up properly! I checked them yesterday to find them at 20 PSI...they are supposed to be between 40-65 PSI. No wonder my last run with the stroller felt like I was pushing the darn thing through wet cement! Had a much smoother run yesterday with properly inflated tires!
I still have the bib from this race out on my dresser...still makes me smile to remember crossing the finish line with her in our first race together!
I LOVE running with the best little running partner ever! Sky is happy in this thing for a good hour. Seriously in all the miles she has logged with me I remember two runs that she was fussy. She fusses less than I do when we run!

New Shoes
I did it, I finally made time before run club last night and got fitted for new shoes. Turns out I still need the same type of shoe, but am in a different brand since Asics doesn't make my show any longer.
Behold the Brooks Ravenna 4!
The biggest change with these shoes is the toe curves up more so my big toes have less contact with the ground, which should help with the blisters/sensitivity I get on the pads of my toes. (I'm about 2 seconds away from embarking on a new sock finding adventure. Going to give these shoes a few weeks and let a few other things with my feet clear up first (can I just say that what running does to your feet is not fun sometimes!), but I'm not sure the compression socks are wicking enough for me.)
Anyway the other big difference is it feels like these shoes grip the pavement more and it's a softer landing. In my Asics I could hear myself landing, I actually sounded like an elephant, but with these I didn't hear anything. That may not mean a darn thing, but I like the feel and lack of elephant sound for sure!
After a few weeks, and this weekends race, if I still love them then I'm going to save my pennies and get a 2nd pair so I can rotate, and let them rest between runs like your supposed to.
Did the 3 mile loop last night with the group. Just wanted to shake the legs out but not put too many miles on them before the race Saturday. Felt strong and easier than normal, so that's good.
It's kinda funny, but Sky must recognize the difference between my running cloths and my normal cloths, because on Wednesdays when we go to leave the house she says run, run instead of go, go like normal when we are getting ready to leave. She's probably also used to our schedule and going to stroller group run every Wednesday.
Sky is still sick, and while I feel bad for her I have to say her sleeping in an extra 45 to 60 minutes every morning is nice. I will be so glad when we can resume play dates (miss you Jodi and Sky misses Reagan!), play to learn, frog n kiwi etc. Week two of keeping her away from kids and confined play spaces is getting old for both of us.
She is trying very hard to do things for herself with some often funny results...

What, who turned out the lights?!
Ok, maybe I do need some help putting this thing on.
I'm working with her to put her pants on by herself. She is pretty good at taking them off, but putting them on she ends up with both legs in one pant leg, or tries to put them on like a hat. She is starting to have an opinion about what shirts I pick out, and her shoes too. All her shoes are sneakers, but she for sure knows what ones she will or won't wear for the day! The nice thing about having lots of jeans and random shirts is that none of her outfits get crazy when she picks them out, so that's nice.
7:02, and she is awake...only 2 minutes of sleeping in today...maybe just maybe she is feeling better?!
Have a great day all!

Chill Monday
Pretty relaxed day at home today. So want to be running right now, the sun is amazing, but resting the legs from yesterday's run, and more importantly resting my foot.
Plus, have an IRB meeting tonight and a few research studies to review, so working on that as well.
Since Sky is still sick, and we are house bound so as not to share germs, Tina cam over and visited with us. It has been way, way too long since catching up with her, and it was nice to just sit and talk. Plus she is a nurse, so knows how not to catch Sky's cold. :)
A little late lunch after her nap...
Want to give a shout out to our nephew Jordan who leaves today for basic training, with the AF, in TX. It's a new chapter in his life with new adventures ahead, and I wish him all the best!

Ham, rice crackers, cheese, apple, and Pedialyte...it's how to kill a cold.

Sunny Sunday Run!
That's right, I said it, Sunny! Elya, El and I did a flatish 6 mile run this morning, and it was amazing! The sun was out, my legs felt great, blisters are still there, but didn't hurt, my bruised foot that has been hurting all week was totally fine today, and did I mention it was flatish?! Only one hill at the end, and it was hard, but average pace was 9:30 something! I want to finish next weeks 10K in under an hour, and came in at 57 minutes today! The course next weekend is flat, no killer hill at the end, so I know we are going to crush our goal!
El is such a great running cheerleader constantly encouraging us to keep the pace up, work the arms, you can do it, get up that hill etc. She wills me to run faster and I do! Hat's off to Elya, she had come off working a double shift and had very, very little sleep the last 48 hours and still got in 6 miles at a good pace!
I felt so good after the run that I came home and registered for the 3'rd 1/2 of the year. (Still waiting for registration to open for the 2nd one I'm doing). 3 in 78 days I think it is. Only really worried about the first 2 since they are 2 weeks apart. Can't figure out how to rest, and train for the next one in such a short amount of time.
Now, I get to enjoy the rest of my day...
Which will include play time at the park. Sky is still sick, but obviously feeling a little better, so we are going to get her out of the house for a bit.
And, I'm going to put my early birthday present to use again tonight! Mark got me a 4 quart All-Clad French skillet with lid!
I love to cook so much that my old skillet bit the dust, and I was ready to make the switch from non-stick to stainless steel. We went shopping last night so I could see the options in person, feel how heavy they were etc. and came home with this beautiful skillet. It even came with it's own dust bag to protect it while it's not being used. I feel so grown up! Was exciting to come home last night and use a "real/professional" skillet!
The next one on my wish list is the 12 inch skillet. With those two pans I can cook anything!!! Ok, almost anything. I love my new skillet though, kinda feel like a real chef with my apron and stainless steel!
Time to enjoy the sun at less than a 9:30 pace! Hahaha...although chasing Sky around requires sprinting so no rest for these legs I guess.

Being sick = lot's of pj time and snacks while watching Ellen and Sophia The First. That is a treat because she usually isn't allowed to eat unless she is at the table.

Thankful Thursday, on Friday
Missed posting yesterday...taking care of sicko's. :)
I am super thankful that Sky is still really pleasant when she is sick! Proof...
From this morning, she is worse today by the way, but she still wants to play with Daddy's hats and be cute. Love this sick little girl so much!
I'm also thankful for the perspective being a mom has provided. Pre-Sky I would see kids at the store, in restaurants or just out and about, with rats nests in their hair, crusty snot on their face, and dirty cloths on. And, it always made me wonder what kind of parent let's their kids go out and about dirty and un-kept like that. Did they not love them enough to care? Especially when the parents are clean and put together, why, just why?
Now I know! Sometimes it's just not worth the hair battle in the morning, or after a nap. Especially when already running late. So you just hope that your kid is cute enough to pull it off and that non of the other mommies will judge you for not brushing the knots out.
Snotty noses seem to be the daily thing with little ones. I don't know about other's little ones, but Sky HATES having her nose wiped. And, if I wiped her nose every time it really needed it her nose and lip would be so chapped and raw. So, I save it for the really big ugly green boogers or the really runny nose. (Like the one she has now because she is sick). It's called picking your battle. Some battles must happen because it's a value thing, or a safety thing, or something really important. But, I for one would rather deal with a little snot dry or not than having a screaming fit in the middle of the store.
Given the fact that her clothes are dirty 2.5 seconds after putting them on I totally get it now. Plus, do you know how many times we have been on an adventure or at the park playing, with all the falling down that goes along with it, and then decide to go out for dinner because we just don't feel like cooking. Ok, that doesn't happen all that often actually because we just don't eat out all that much, but every time we do it's been after Sky had fallen in the mud at the park or has spilled her snack all over her, and we show up looking all disheveled, or at least Sky does.
While I'm at it, I totally understand spending all day in nasty looking yet super comfortable sweat pants too. Today is actually one of those days. Sweats and pj's because being sick requires lot's of comfy snuggle time. Oh, and I totally get the mismatched outfits now too. Sometimes the only clean laundry is the top from one outfit and the bottom from another, or the only way to get out the door without a screaming fit it to just let them put what they want on, no matter how silly.
I send a general apology to the universe and to all parents out there for my pre-parenthood lack of perspective. I get it now, I totally get it.
I hope everyone has a great weekend! I will be busy knitting my scarf, which is a great non-technology activity, (I think I totally forgot to mention Jodi and I took a knitting class!), sneaking in a last 6 miler before the 10K next weekend, and snuggling with Sky. I do hope she feels better soon!
